Happy second anniversary, Gungnir! (5/19/2011 - 5/19/2013)
starring Actual Perfect Creature Alyssa
i wanna replay gungnir too once i’m done with the games i’m working on and junk :O
9 notes Favorite DHEs: Isabeli, Gungnir
“Aww. And here I thought we were the same. Don’t you know? The lance of Niflheim—Gungnir is not going to save the Leonica. It’s the key to open the door. It’s a ‘demon lance’ just like it sounds, with the power to destroy everything.”
7 notes Favorite DHEs: Valery Brigid, Gungnir
“A revolution is when the ‘lower class’ changes ‘upper society’. A battle where ‘upper society’ changes ‘upper society’ is just a change of rulers. It’s just repeating history. To get out of that trap, you need one thing. And that’s to free Gargandia from ever having an emperor again.”
11 notes Favorite DHEs: Ragnus Raguel, Gungnir“Ever since I joined Esperanza, all I’ve thought of is defeating our father’s killer. Since I’m Daltania, I was always rejected in Espada, but—our father was the only one who loved me. If he hadn’t saved me, I wouldn’t be here. Our father was everything to me. So—I can’t just turn my back on Robertus. I will definitely kill him. If that can bring Esperanza victory—I’ll be satisfied.”
12 notes Favorite DHEs: Alessandra “Alyssa” Dlacroa, Gungnir
“Let’s do our best, Julio. Because I’m sure that what we want is the same. Even if it takes a really long time, even if there’s a darker and harsher abyss than the Great Ravine separating us, I am your ‘friend’.”
1 note This is either a disaster, or a miracle.
In which the casts of Dept. Heaven swap places.
Once upon a time I made two posts.
Later, this story became a thing.
Zugzwang is basically my hero and so that was more than enough for me to get really excited over my idea of the DHE characters playing musical chairs with each others’ games being written. But the stories themselves are sufficiently fresh and funny enough that they are each a real treat, and they’re a whirlwind tour of witty prose and great characterization.
Here we have Meria and Willimgard exploring the high seas and raising a ruckus all the while in the world of Gloria Union; here we have Elise making a stopover at Alyssa and Julio’s residence on her mission to destroy Riviera; here we have the Yggdra with the Centurio Buster meeting Zazarland and crew in a bar and proposing revolution; here we have Rose putting an amnesiac Ein up as a houseguest of sorts while working to lead Esperanza; here we have Nessiah rallying an army under circumstances too good for me to discuss here.
Basically all these things are unquestionably miracles.
Obligatory excerpt:
She rolled her shoulders, listened to the clattering coming from the other rooms. “These nuts are good.”
“Yeah,” he mumbled. “Alyssa likes them.”
His gaze never left her body. The angel almost sighed as she slumped back in her seat. “How’s your boner?
That got him to splutter. “What?”
“Nothing,” she muttered, rolling her eyes at the balking boy. “You’re no fun, that’s all.”
The kid looked at her, hopelessly lost, as Alyssa zipped by him in the hall. Elise had to admit, she didn’t expect a girl like her to have a lance like that. Julio managed to catch her by the arm as she set down her belongings. “What’s the matter, Alyssa? Where are we going?”
“On a trip,” the blonde said, smiling at them both. “There are a few things we need to take care of.”
Elise nearly snorted at that. This was going to be something, she thought, taking a handful of nuts.
In summary: If you’re a DHE and you wish these darn games had more capacity for a good end, you’re in the right place. Read this. You’re not going to be sorry.
1 note gosh this is a nonspecific question is this even a question does it count
Okay though. What can I say about Alyssa/her harem? Other than the fact that good god do I like it a whole lot.
I guess I am just really tickled that Alyssa/her harem is a thing that exists! Usually, to find a female character at the center of a harem you need to look in very specific genres of Japanese media—otome games and certain kinds of shoujo manga, mostly, things marketed towards girls and women in their teens and twenties that adapt tropes from the seinen genre; sometimes yuri-genre things, which are all marketed for the male gaze anyhow.
But Gungnir—DHE in general—is marketed with the assumption that mostly young men are going to be playing it. And Alyssa, beyond being this charismatic and proactive driving force to the story with her head screwed on with greater accuracy than the card-carrying protagonist, has a lot of sexually tense or otherwise cute and fluffy and potentially shippy scenes with loads of people! Girls and boys!
Like, as much as I love Riviera, it’s unquestionably heavily influenced by the harem genre. Nearly all the women in the game, and a couple of the men, all want a bite of Ecthel’s trouser sausage. There’s kind of an expectation in Japanese media that when the cast consists of a boy and a bunch of girls, the girls are all going to orbit the boy’s dick, because that’s the target demographic’s fantasy.
Your main party in Gungnir eventually consists of a boy and a bunch of girls, but the ladies of Gungnir do not orbit Julio’s dick. (To be fair, Elise inquires about the state of Julio’s dick every now and again, but Alyssa’s the one she shares her favorite food with.) To the contrary, most of the cast orbits Alyssa. And Valery, the only girl who does not, would instead like Ragnus for her waifu. So I’m just sitting here going, wow, I approve of this message!
I ship Alyssa/the whole harem mostly because Alyssa/each individual member is gr8 gr8 gr8 and I can’t pick just one of these things to be my OTP. So: Alyssa is polyamorous and everyone wins! Especially Alyssa. You go, girl. You go fight Robertus with the power of progressive thinking and charisma and supreme sexual satisfaction. Wipe all that smarm off your dad’s obnoxious face.

Yearly progress for 2012! Blank sheet from here.
It’s sometimes hard to tell how well I’m growing as an artist, but when I look back at my progress sheets for past years, I do get the sense that I’ve gotten a bit better at some things.
Here’s 2011 and here’s 2010, for comparison’s sake. I can at least be happy that my coloring skills have leaped forward immensely in the past two years.
…I keep saying this, but it sure is Dept. Heaven in here.
1 note Even though I don’t usually participate in LJ writing community 31-days, I lurk there because I really love the prompts and tend to keep them on hand for personal use. This is a set from September 2010 that I have been working on since 2010 and just finished recently (see, this is why I don’t participate)!
Here’s a list of all the fics, and links to them on AO3! Content warning tags are featured in the AO3 headers.
It sure is Dept. Heaven in here.
